Tips & Tricks: Getting More Out of Twitch-Style Soft Plastics

Southern Fishing News

Twitch baits and soft‑plastic jerkbaits are deadly tools for bass, especially around structure, bluff banks, and anywhere bait schools are milling. Here are a few ways to expand their action and versatility.

The Bassassin Twitch and Bassassin Shad (in all their variations) are perfect examples — simple profiles that come alive with the right rigging.

Weightless Works… But Comes With Limits
Most anglers fish these baits weightless on a standard offset hook. It’s a proven setup, but it forces you into a slower retrieve to keep the lure just under the surface. Speed up, and the bait tends to blow out or skip across the top. That can be great when you want a fleeing‑minnow look, but it’s not always the most controlled or consistent presentation.

Enter the Slider Snagless Hook
Rigging the Twitch or Shad on a Slider Snagless Head/Hook changes the entire personality of the bait. A light Slider — 1/16 to 1/8 oz — adds just enough nose weight to unlock several advantages:

• Keeps the bait subsurface at higher speeds. No more unintentional surface breaks when you jerk or burn it.
• Adds a more pronounced underwater dart. The top of the Snagless Slider Head is flat, and the weighted head gives the lure a sharper, more deliberate side‑to‑side kick.
• Lets you fish deeper, faster. Every pause triggers a controlled sink, pulling the bait down several times quicker than a weightless rig.
• Still allows a slow fall when desired.

The 1/16 oz. version sinks subtly enough for suspended fish or finicky bass. The fall is affected by the line used. At Southern Fishing News, we use 6 lb., P-Line monofilament. Fluorocarbon line could speed the rate of fall. Heavier monofilament line will slow the fall.

Where This Rig Shines
The Twitch/Shad + Slider combo is tailor‑made for:

• Docks — skip it under, let it fall, then twitch it back out.
• Bluffs and vertical structure — work it down the face with pauses.
• Drop‑offs — let the bait glide and fall along the contour.
• Suspended Bass • Schooling Fish

You get the same natural, erratic action these baits are known for, but with far more control over depth and speed.

The Bottom Line
Both weightless and Slider‑rigged setups have their place. But if you want the most versatile, depth‑controlled, and high‑action presentation from a twitch or jerk, the weighted Slider rig is the clear winner.
