The Alabama Rig continues to be the No. 1 bass fishing setup on Clear Lake (CA). In fact, it’s the No. 1 setup on just about all the lakes in Northern California
The most popular version of the rig at Clear Lake is the one that has five wire hangers with three small swimbaits (with hooks and two spinner blades as teasers). The spinner blades attract the fish to the swimbaits with the hooks. A good example of how effective the Alabama Rig has been in tournaments came last weekend during a small tournament held a five-fish limit weighing 29 pounds and he said all the fish were caught on the “Rig.”
I fished Clear Lake near Rocky Point on Saturday with Bill Timmer of Lakeport and we found an active school of bass. On Timmer’s third cast with the Alabama Rig he hooked into a 10-pound bass. After that the action was non stop on both the rig and live jumbo minnows. Our best five bass weighed a total of more than 30 pounds. Another fisherman near us was catching bass after bass using live crawdads.
