Sixty-seven members of the Shoals Youth Bassmasters out of 121 on the roster fished the final tournament of their 2019 season on Pickwick Lake September 21. A nice morning welcomed the young anglers but the cool air did not last long before giving way to hot finish by 11 AM.
The club tournament was dedicated to the late Randy Henson. Randy had been a long-time supporter of the Shoals Youth Bassmasters and a regular, fishing many of the club events as the boat driver/adult onboard. Paula and Makenzie Henson provided the trophies for the end of the year tournament and picnic awards.
Hayden Brewer took first place in the 10 and Under group with a big sack of all smallies weighing 17 lbs.-12 oz. First place in the 11 to 15 Division went to Mattie Holland who brought in 15 lbs.-13 oz. anchored with a 5 lb.-6 oz. largemouth that also took big fish of the tournament. In the 16 to 18 Division, it was Hannah Fleeman sitting in first place bringing 14 lbs.-14 oz. to the scales.
Awards for Anglers of the Year and the biggest largemouth and smallmouth of the year were presented after the picnic.
Hayden Brewer took Anger of Year for 10 and Under, Camden Randall was runner-up in the 11 to 15 Age Group with Mattie Holland claiming the top spot. Hunter Inabnitt was the Angler of Year for 16 to 18-year-old group. Jared Sparks and William Ratliff were runner-ups in that age group.
Tate Dodd had largest smallmouth, 4 lb.- 6 oz. for the year. Hayden Brewer, winner of 10 and under Angler of Year also had the big largemouth of the year, 6 lb.-1 oz.
Three anglers have fished many years with Shoals Youth Bassmasters and will be 19 next year which will make them ineligible to compete in the club. Katelyn Perry, Jared Sparks (a member of the UNA Fishing Team next year) and William Ratliff. We wish these three fine young people the best in the future and hope they all will continue to “wet a hook” in the years to come.
