Conrad Morris, owner of Mississippi’s TowBoatUS Bay St. Louis, has expanded his boat-towing business to the east and west with the acquisition of TowBoatUS Biloxi, Mississippi and TowBoatUS East and West Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana. Morris, who grew up boating and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and nearby bays, rivers and bayous, has spent his whole adult life working as a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain. Within weeks of opening TowBoatUS Bay St. Louis, Mississippi last summer, he realized he had found his calling.
“I’ve always enjoyed being on the water,” said Morris. “The fact that boaters are so grateful when we show up to lend a hand just adds to the satisfaction of doing this type of work. I feel like this is what I was made to do, so it was an easy decision to extend our service area when the Biloxi and Lake Pontchartrain ports became available.”
Much like an auto club for boaters, TowBoatUS offers nationwide on-water towing plans for saltwater boaters and anglers for just $149 a year that includes BoatUS membership. Without a towing plan, boaters face costs that average $700 per incident nationally. Morris and the captains who work with him are on call day and night to help boaters who have a mechanical breakdown, run out of fuel, need a battery jumpstart or a gentle tow off one of the Gulf Coast’s ubiquitous sandbars.
Morris’s TowBoatUS companies now provide service to boaters along the entire Mississippi coast, extending from the Alabama border into Louisiana waters, including Gulf of Mexico bayous and barrier islands, all of Lake Pontchartrain and adjacent lakes and rivers. Morris and other experienced licensed captains run his four towboats—a 26-foot Gravois aluminum boat with a 300-hp diesel engine based Point Cadet Marina in Biloxi, a 24-foot Boston Whaler with twin 175-hp outboards at Bay Marina in Bay St. Louis, a 23-foot Sea Hunt center console powered by a 200-hp outboard at The Dock in Slidell, and a 24-foot Parker center console with twin 150-hp outboards at Lake Pontchartrain Harbor in Mandeville.
All of the boats sport bright-red hulls with the TowBoatUS name and logo emblazoned in white, and they are fully rigged for towing and salvage, with powerful pumps, battery jump packs, dive gear and extra fuel.
