Prattville Parks and Recreation to offer Fly Fishing Classes in May

The Prattville Parks and Recreation Department will be offering fly fishing classes in downtown Prattville on May 1-3, 2015. The classes will take place at the Doster Center (424 S. Northington St., Prattville, Ala.), Creek Walk at Autauga Creek, and at the Pratt Park pavilion. The classes cost $5 and space is limited to 12 anglers. For registration and class times, contact the Prattville Parks and Recreation Department at (334) 595-0800.

“While fly fishing is typically associated with trout, it can also be a fun way to catch fish native to Alabama like bream and bass,” said Doug Darr, Aquatic Education Coordinator for the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF). “By taking this class, adults and youth can learn an interesting method of catching fish and acquire knowledge about the aquatic environment.”

Participants in the fly fishing classes will learn about various fly fishing equipment, how to set up and cast a fly rod and reel, tie a fly, and be given the opportunity to fish in a pond and stream. Materials and equipment for the class will be provided, though anglers may bring their own fly fishing gear.

Classes are open to anglers age 14 and older, or anglers 11 and older who are accompanied by an adult. To participate in the classes, anglers ages 16 through 64 will need a valid Alabama fishing license. Fishing licenses are available for purchase at various local outdoors retailers or online at www.outdooralabama.com/freshwater-fishing-license.

The fly fishing classes are conducted through a partnership between the Prattville Parks and Recreation Department, WFF, Bass Pro Shops, and local fly fisherman George Williams (www.mergingwaters.com).
