As summer winds down, the Rogersville Chamber of Commerce and Joe Wheeler State Park have come together to host a day of family fun along the banks of Wheeler Lake. Set for August 15, 2015, Rockin’ the River is a celebration of live music, children’s activities, food and other family-friendly fun at one of north Alabama’s premier state parks, Joe Wheeler State Park. The daylong celebration offers one last getaway before school gets back into full swing.
On Saturday morning, a youth fishing rodeo (for up to 14 years old) gets underway at 8 a.m. between the lodge and marina. Participants must bring their own pole, tackle and stringer and a parent or guardian must be present. Registration is $2 per person. Weigh-in will be held at 11 a.m. and prizes will be awarded to the biggest stringer & biggest fish.
More fun awaits kids from 1 to 7 p.m. with a Kids’ Fun Area offering a giant blow up slide, bouncy house, Sci-Quest Slime Making Machine, Rise Raptors Project Educational Tent, sidewalk chalk, face painting, and train rides provided by the Athens Lion Club. An armband offering unlimited access may be purchased for $5.
A handful of bands are scheduled to perform on the patio beginning at 2:30 p.m. and include Sweet Sue, Evangalene Taylor & Firewater, Wildwood Ruminators, and The Midnighters. Along with some of the area’s best musicians, there will be concessions and a cash bar, raffle drawings, and guest appearances by the University of North Alabama Bass Fishing Team and players from its football team as well as local high school cheerleaders and bass fishing teams. Twilight golf featuring unlimited golf for $27 at “The General” golf course will also be offered from 1 to 7 p.m.
Family fun will also be offered on Friday evening, August 14th and Joe Wheeler State Park is offering a special rate of $101 plus tax for a standard room with a minimum two-night stay.
