Shoals Youth Bassmasters take on Wheeler Lake

The Shoals Youth Bassmasters launched from the First Creek boat ramp on Wheeler Lake on July 20 to compete for the top trophies in each age division. This was the fourth tournament in the club’s 2024 six-event season.

Fifty-four young anglers, boys and girls alike, began fishing in what was more pleasant weather than at least the last few tournaments that were fished in very hot temperatures or wind. Overcast skies and cooler temps made for a good day of fishing. Richard Laxson, director of the club, said the rain held off until around the 11 AM weigh-in but then was only a sprinkle as the youths weighed their fish.

Total weight at the scales put Jacob Weir in first place in the 10 and Under age division with 8.30 lbs. Jacob also took lunker honors with his 4.32-pound largemouth bass. Conner Kyle got the first-place trophy in the 11-15 age division with 7.76 lbs. The top place trophy in the 16-18 age division went to Cayden Turner who weighed in 5.20 lbs.

The weights and totals listed below only reflect the bass weighed in by the placing youths in each age division. The overall total weight of bass caught by the entire field of fifty-four youth anglers is much higher.
