Shoals Youth Brave Heat and Catch Fish

The Shoals Youth Bassmasters fished the second tournament of the 2022 season on Wilson Lake in North Alabama on June 18. Fifty-six young anglers and their adult sponsors took to the waters of Wilson Lake out of Lock-Six Ramp.

The morning launch took place with very comfortable weather transitioning to very hot for the 11 AM weigh-in. The youth in the three age divisions took advantage of the cooler morning temps and boated quite a few bass.

Wheeler Mason took the first place trophy in the 10 and Under Age Division with 8 lb. 5 oz. The 11-15 Age Division was led by Jackson Garner’s bag going 6 lb. 13 oz. on the scales. The first-place finisher in the 16-18 Age Division was held down by Briar Terry for an 8 lb. 11 oz. haul. Ashley Rhinehart finished in the second-place spot in this division but earned an additional trophy for bringing in the biggest bass of the tournament – a 4 lb. 1 oz. largemouth.

Club organizer Richard Laxson did not win a trophy but his tournament-day birthday did earn the kids some birthday cupcakes in celebration. A noteworthy fact is that Richard has been running the Shoals Youth Bassmasters for roughly half his life.
