On a very hot Saturday, August 23, thirty-eight young angler took to the water on Wilson Lake out of Lock Six Ramp. The Wilson tournament was the club’s fifth of the season. The young anglers, ages under ten years old to eighteen years old (in three age divisions) registered a high limit of bass over 10 lbs. and a couple more that were very close to that weight. A very nice big fish of the tournament, that went 5 lbs. 4 oz., was also brought in.
Hot sun did not deter these anglers. They, and their boat captains, deserve a lot of respect for crawling out of bed at zero-dark-thirty to fish, knowing how hot the temps were going to be. Every youth that dared to fish in these conditions is a winner.
The first thru third places in each age division were:
10 and under age group
1st Place: Hayden Smith, 9 lbs. 15 oz.
2nd Place: Luke Mattox, 7 lbs. 13 oz.
3rd Place: Hunter Brewer, 7 lbs. 7 oz.
11 to 15 age group
1st Place: Clayton Birdyshaw, 10 lbs. 7 oz.
2nd Place: Mckenzie McKennon, 7 lbs. 3 oz.
3rd Place: Katelyn Perry, 2 lbs 3 oz.
16 to 18 age group
1st Place: Jacob Clifton, 9 lbs. 8 oz.
2nd Place: Jonathon Peters, 5 lbs. 9 oz.
3rd Place: Dustin Brewer, 4 lbs. 8 oz.
Lunker: Hayden Smith, 5 lbs. 4 oz. largemouth
More food was also brought in for the club’s Food Bank Project.
The Shoals Youth Bassmasters’ next, and final tournament for 2014, will be on Pickwick Lake, Saturday, September 3, out of the McFarland ramp. After the tournament the youth will be treated to a picnic and awarded “happy bags” of fishing “stuff”. Only youth that join the club before the final event will be eligible to participate according to Richard Laxson, director of the club.
