TVA recently completed a new project at Pickwick Dam in Hardin County, TN, enabling the hydro-generation units to operate in condensing mode to support grid voltage stability in the area.

When the units are in condensing mode, an air pocket develops around the turbine runner. When the units are moved from condensing to generation mode, this air is released out the back side of the dam, causing turbulent waters.

Pickwick Dam has warning signs, strobe lights and an audible alarm to alert boaters to clear the area when the switch to generating status is about to occur. Boaters should obey all posted safety regulations and precautions and steer clear of the dam when alerted.
Failure to heed warnings could result in serious and potentially life-threatening danger to boaters. No fish is worth risking your health and safety.
