Have you ever had a fishing trip you’d rather forget? Most of us probably have. Years ago, the late Bill Castile and I decided we HAD to go bass fishing — in the middle of winter. OK. So we headed to Shoals Creek on Wilson Lake. At the time, I had a pontoon parked in a slip there. I cranked the motor, backed out of the slip, and headed out into Shoals Creek.
I failed to mention that the temperature was exceptionally low for the month and Shoals Creek was iced over. Yep, my pontoon was now an icebreaker. We moved slowly and steadily up the creek to our fishing spot.
By then, we were thrilled to finally reach our fishing spot. I picked up a rod with my favorite War Eagle spinnerbait tied on. I made my first cast of the day and watched with horror as the spinnerbait slid across the ice and onto the bank. We obviously had not been paying much attention to the bank conditions. No water around was unfrozen.
I looked at Bill and said, “Bill, we are either the most dedicated bass fishermen in the world or we are completely stupid for even being out here today…and I strongly lean to the latter!”
